Auditory perception of amplitude modulated sinusoid using a pure tone and band-limited noises as modulation signals

چکیده
Frequency selectivity in amplitude modulated sound have been reported in terms of modulation threshold level for amplitude-modulation detection, where a pink or white noise carrier was modulated with a sinusoid and band-limited white noise, which showed similar band-pass type masking characteristics. Such previous studies treated band limited white noise carriers. In this paper, an amplitude-modulation detection level is measured in the case of sinusoidal carrier. The obtained characteristics are similar to those for pink or white noise carriers; the detection level increases around 16Hz when the 1000Hz sinusoidal carrier is modulated by 16Hz pure tone and band-limited white noise, and the increase is localized around 16Hz within 1 to 1.5 octave wide.

A computational model of human auditory signal processing and perception.
A model of computational auditory signal-processing and perception that accounts for various aspects of simultaneous and nonsimultaneous masking in human listeners is presented. The model is based on the modulation filterbank model described by Dau et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 102, 2892 (1997)] but includes major changes at the peripheral and more central stages of processing. The model contains...
متن کاملResponses of dorsal cochlear nucleus neurons to signals in the presence of modulated maskers.
The detection of a signal in noise is enhanced when the masking noise is coherently modulated over a wide range of frequencies. This phenomenon, known as comodulation masking release (CMR), has been attributed to across-channel processing; however, the relative contribution of different stages in the auditory system to such across-channel processing is unknown. It has been hypothesized that wid...

In this paper, transistor lasers (TLs) are used as an optical modulator for generation of ASK(Amplitude Shift Keying) and FSK (Frequency Shift Keying) optical signals. Our analysis is based on continuity equation, rate equations, and the theory of discontinuity of quasi-fermi level at the abrupt junction. Our simulation results indicate that, the specification of ASK and FSK optical signals, ar...
متن کامل2pPPb31. Development of a novel hearing-aid for the profoundly deaf using bone- conducted ultrasonic perception: Assessments of the modulation type with regard to articulation, intelligibility, and sound quality
Bone-conducted ultrasound (BCU) is perceived even by the profoundly sensorineural deaf. We have developed a novel hearing-aid using BCU perception (BCU hearing aid: BCUHA) for the profoundly deaf. In the BCUHA, ultrasonic sinusoids of about 30 kHz are amplitudemodulated by speech and presented to the mastoid. Generally, two sounds are perceived: one is a high-pitched tone due to the ultrasonic ...
متن کاملDissociable Neural Response Signatures for Slow Amplitude and Frequency Modulation in Human Auditory Cortex
Natural auditory stimuli are characterized by slow fluctuations in amplitude and frequency. However, the degree to which the neural responses to slow amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency modulation (FM) are capable of conveying independent time-varying information, particularly with respect to speech communication, is unclear. In the current electroencephalography (EEG) study, participants l...
